Christ The End of the Law: A Poem by Jeffrey Williams

by | May 13, 2025 | Practical Theology

The Law is that which the sinner may dread,

Yet when he follows, pride swells his head.

Even in the best intentions of the heart,

It is not enough, not even a small part.

Thus, Christ comes to fulfill and terminate,

Let that sink in, let it settle, let it germinate.

We see Christ’s connection to the Law,

Through His perfection, it exposes our flaw.

It may draw us, point us, capture us to Him,

All the while exposing the mischief of sin.

Though to think for a moment, “What if Adam never fell?”

Brother, at best, the law would be the perfect guardrail.

If ignorance says, “I can keep the law,”

Then pride has captured you in its maw.

To clarify before we move on my friend,

There is nothing you can do to remove your sin!

Law only reveals our need for cleansing, but only as it kills us,

The Gospel is the one thing (I’m consenting) washes as it fills us.

The Law’s fulfillment is in a Lamb, finally in Christ,

Shed blood, the Law requires, it demands one sacrificed.

Every believer may then shout,

I have believed, I have no doubt!

His righteousness is now mine, so I must glorify Him,

Thank the Lord who is good, my outlook is not grim!

With ourselves in connection to Christ we must speak and there leave it,

Because Jesus Christ is the end of the law for everyone that believes it.

The good news of blessing is not for one without sin’s stain,

But for those who confess and forsake it (again and again!).

We are all justified when in Christ’s blood we are bound,

At the foot of the cross, our feet stand on equal ground.

We chasten our sin; indeed we weep as we bemoan it,

But, when we put thy beauties on, thou hast overthrown it.

Do not forget as we pursue our King upon His throne,

It has all been His work, we have no righteousness of our own.
