*The following is a poem based on C.H. Spurgeon’s sermon, “Christ the End of the Law” by CBTS student Corey Shaver
O Christ, the purpose of the law,
Its noblest object.
In you we rest, our life, our all,
To you hearts genuflect.
The law, our tutor, led to you,
Led to your mercy seat,
Where we can find sweet mercy new
When bowing at your feet.
O Christ, the only way to heav’n,
Bright heaven’s greatest prize,
Ne’er by the Pharisaic leav’n
Could we gaze in your eyes.
Your gift, the law, revealed to us
Our utter helplessness,
Our sin, our need: “We are but dust –
Lord, cleanse our filthiness!”
O Christ, fulfilment of the law:
Its penalty’s no more,
Because you lived without a flaw,
and sufferings you bore.
All those who to you look for life,
Find peaceful covenant.
They’ll live in heaven without strife.
The law’s curse now is rent.
O Christ, in you law’s end is found,
Its final termination.
Elect from nations all around,
Will offer you oblation.
Lord, everyone who does believe
will offer thanks and praise.
God’s wrath his sons will not receive,
Your righteousness wrath stays.
O Christ, your Law is just and good,
Our daily meditation.
We look not for our life in it,
Nor for justification.
Obedience to you we find
To be our joyful task.
Your law not grievous to the mind
of those who in you bask.
