A poem based on Spurgeon’s sermon, “Christ the Spoiler of Principalities and Powers” by Jeremy Bowser

The following is a poem based on Spurgeon’s sermon, “Christ the Spoiler of Principalities and Powers”:

On the cross, Christ made a spoil of principalities and powers,

The Prince of Darkness was cast out, and to the confines of hell he cowers.

Faith regards the cross, not as an emblem of shame, but a token of Glory,

While darkness covers the battlefield, the cross is the center of battle in His story.

Christ routed all His enemies, and Satan lies with his head broken,

His head crushed with a rod of iron; the crown from Adam is now Christ’s as a token.

Satan’s sharp sword, the Law, was dipped in the poison of sin,

Christ dashed the sword from his hand, and the prince stood with nothing to spin.

Satan cannot renew the attack, paradise and more were returned,

Without fear we now take up our cross, freedom for God’s elect is what He has earned.

Rome used horses, chariots, trophies, and flags to celebrate great victory,

For Christ, every triumph is contained in the cross, the song of Moses sung, for He is worthy.

The pearly gates are wide open, Heroes march in the Golden Street,

He comes, Jesus Himself, with many crowns and Eyes of fire, victory is complete.

The old serpent bound and fettered, hell’s dungeon blown to bits,

Thine eyes shall see Him in the day of his glory, upon His throne now and forever he sits.
