“The law is good, if one uses it lawfully”
Few things are as controversial in the present day as the law of God. Many professing Christians teach that the law is something only for the Old Testament era, contrasting the law of God with the love of God. While many Christian churches seem to downplay the role of the law in the Christian life or explicitly teach antinomianism, the larger culture languishes in open slavery to sin while vigorously asserting the supposed right of the individual to be a law to himself.
On the other hand, some overreact to this cultural deterioration by embracing forms of legalism that insist on obedience and faithfulness as a condition of their justification. Beyond questions of personal sanctification, there are a range of opinions concerning how the law of God should apply to our government and society at large. How is a Christian to make sense of these matters of the law of God amid such an environment?
The Christian must turn to the Scriptures to receive instruction on these important questions. The Word of God teaches that the moral law of God, a revelation to man of the nature, character, and will of God, is to be loved and delighted in through all ages—regardless of whether it is the Old Testament or New Testament era.
The moral law is “summarily comprehended in the Ten Commandments” (Q47, Baptist Catechism), and these commandments are summed up by our Lord Jesus, binding us to “love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our strength and with all our mind, and our neighbor as ourselves” (Luke 10:27).
Paul insists that the law is good when it is used lawfully (1 Timothy 1:8). The law must be applied distinctly to the believer and to the unbeliever. The law and the gospel “sweetly comply” (2LCF 19:7), the law revealing the glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the gospel saving and then empowering men to uphold and honor the law of God. It is the gospel of Jesus Christ that enables men to say from their hearts, “Oh, how I love your law!”
We hope you will join us in Montgomery, Alabama on March 13-15, 2025, as we seek to provide biblical clarity on these important questions concerning the law of God. As we present a biblical doctrine of the law as summarized in the Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689, our chief aim is to build up the people of God to love and delight in the law of God. We further hope to help attendees distinguish between the law and the gospel, understand the different functions of the law, and consider how the law of God should be applied to our society.
